Difficult Transition to 3D in Lode Runner 3-D
Lode Runner 3-D on the Nintendo 64 tries to put the classic formula of strategically avoiding enemies and collecting gold into a new 3D format. While I like the idea itself, I find that the transition to 3D causes more frustration than innovation. The camera is often awkward, making it hard to maintain a good overview. This affects precision, which I find very disappointing, especially since it's such an important part of the gameplay.
Visually, Lode Runner 3-D does what it needs to do, but I feel it lacks the charm of its predecessors. Everything feels a bit sterile, which doesn't help the atmosphere. The strength of the original Lode Runner games for me was precisely in that simple yet charming presentation. Unfortunately, this doesn't come across well in this 3D version.
There are certainly moments of puzzle enjoyment to be found in Lode Runner 3-D, but I feel that the game never really manages to convince. It feels more like an experiment than a successful evolution of the series. If you're a fan of the classic Lode Runner games, I would approach this version with some caution. It's not the strong reinvention of the series that I had hoped for.
